How can we know where we are headed until we understand where we have been?
With this question in mind, Artist in Residence, Sasha Petrenko, will develop an interactive multi-media installation inspired by the geologic time-scale of Lake Tahoe, from the Hadean era to the Holocene. Lake Tahoe is an on of only 20 ancient lakes in the world older than a million years. Its dramatic past involves volcanism, glaciation and plate tectonics. At over 2 million years old, Lake Tahoe is the third oldest freshwater lake on Earth and the oldest in America. It may be difficult to comprehend the depth of time, scale and space, the cataclysmic events, natural phenomena, flora and fauna involved in its creation. Consulting with experts in the field to learn Tahoe’s dynamic past, studying artifacts and specimens, Petrenko will create an interactive installation with sculpture, video and sound, imagining its dynamic past and speculating our collective future.
4 types of data:
Data sets relating to Lake Tahoe which I will transcribe into sound. Maps, data sets, patterns.
Locations for field work, sites with geologic significance in, on and around Lake Tahoe. For video and sound capture.
Literature, books, poems, stories, articles that will help me gain a deeper understanding of Lake Tahoe’s geologic formation and possible future.
Access to specimens, cores, artifacts and relics to be filmed or scanned.
